The De La Salle Lady Spikers suffered a stinging straight-set defeat against the surging UP Lady Maroons yesterday for their first loss of the season.

For the past several seasons, it appears that Wednesday has not been a good day for the team. Excluding the one game in 2010 that was forfeited, the Lady Spikers has lost a total of 18 times from Season 72 until Season 78. Interestingly, 56% of those lost games were played on this day.

Last season alone, 3 of the 5 losses of the Lady Spikers were Wednesday games wherein 2 happened during the first round of the eliminations.

Here’s a summary of the team’s past midweek losses:

February 24, 2010 – Season 72 Finals Game 1

UST defeated La Salle 3-1.

February 22, 2012 – Season 74 Finals Game 1

In their first ever finals matchup, the Lady Spikers lost to Ateneo 1-3 for their first loss of the season. The team eventually won the next two games to clinch their third title in four years.

March 5, 2014 – Season 76 Finals Game 1

Armed with a thrice to beat edge after sweeping the eliminations, the Lady Spikers suffered a shocking 1-3 loss to Ateneo to open their finals series.

March 12, 2014 – Season 76 Finals Game 3

The Lady Spikers clawed their way back from an 0-2 set deficit and were already at championship point but bad breaks went their way in the end as the Lady Eagles escaped with the win 3-2.

February 18, 2015 – Season 77 last game of the second round

Ateneo prevailed 3-1 to sweep the eliminations

March 5, 2015 – Season 77 Final 4 Game 1

The Lady Spikers were swept by NU 3-0 to force a deciding match.

March 11, 2015 – Season 77 Finals Game 1

Without the injured Ara Galang, La Salle lost to Ateneo in straight sets.

February 10, 2016 – Season 78 Eliminations Round 1

The Lady Spikers rarely lose early in the tournament so that 1-3 defeat to NU came as shocker.

March 2, 2016 – Season 78 Elimination Round 1

In a high after getting their first win against Ateneo in almost 2 years a few days earlier, the Lady Spiker came crashing back to earth with a straight set loss to UST.

April 27, 2016 – Season 78 Finals Game 2

A win away from the title, La Salle blew a 2-0 set lead at the hands of Ateneo.
